Workout Apparel for Men Buying Guide

Let's face it, men, if you're going to work out a lot, you need to stock up on all of the necessary activewear  so that you can exercise in all kinds of temperatures and prevent discomfort. When purchasing workout clothes it's important to consider breathable fabrics, lightweight materials, and items that are easy to layer in cases of extreme cold. Our guide can breakdown the basics for you from top to bottom so you will have everything you need to work out in style. Let's start at the top!

Shirts

When considering what shirt to wear while working out, you want to keep a few things in mind. Make sure the shirt hangs loose, especially around the areas where you tend to sweat. This will give your body room to breathe as you perspire and prevent chafing. If you feel best working out in fitted tops, then make sure you are wearing light fabrics and shirts that are designed for working out. Otherwise, you might feel overheated and not very productive. Also consider weather conditions--most of the shirts below are designed for extreme temperatures, so they will protect you from the sun in the summer and keep you dry in the winter.

Pants and Shorts

Whether you are wearing shorts or long pants, make sure that your waistline isn't too tight. You don't want to be restricted while you are running or riding your bike and a loose waistband will give your body room to breathe. When wearing long pants, it's helpful to try them on before buying. Hemlines can be too long or materials can be bulky, so ensure that you have a good fit and your bottoms are just right. Pockets may also be a useful consideration, especially if you are running outside and not in a gym. This way you have room to hold your keys, iPod, and whatever else you need to bring with you. As for extremely cold temperatures, considering layering up with leggings  designed for men--they are actually perfect for working out.

Jackets and Sweaters

Unless you're looking to catch pneumonia, running without a jacket  or sweater on a chilly day isn't a good idea. Sweaters can trap body heat and keep it in, while also adding layers to your outdoor gear. Also, if you're wearing a sweatshirt a hood always helps to keep your head warm and protected from strong winds.  See some recommendations below.

Sneakers

Your sneakers  are just as important as the rest of your apparel, especially when it comes to running. Buying shoes designed for running is important if you plan on exercising frequently, since they have extra cushioning for your feet and help to support your weight while you are hitting the pavement.  Running shoes may a pretty penny, but if you do your research and find a good fit and brand, they can last a long time and will definitely be worth the investment.

iPod

Consider getting a shuffle  or a lightweight model that you can carry with you while running. Also think about getting an armband  so you can just clip it on and go.

If you like to run around your neighborhood but aren't sure how to gauge your speed or mileage, these tiny little gadgets can go right in your pocket so you can measure your distance to anywhere.

Sunglasses

It's a good idea to protect your eyes when running during the day- the brightness could distract you from your exercise or give you a headache.
