In 1940, at the age of seventeen, Callas made her professional debut at Athen's National Lyric Theater in the operetta Boccaccio. She then performed as Tosca at the Athens Opera in 1942. During the mid 1940s, she returned to her birthplace of New York to audition at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her auditions did not go well and she was not offered a contract.

Maria Callas at Covent Garden - 1962 and 1964

Maria Callas is the quintessential diva who changed the face of the opera in the 20th century. The repertoire in this performance shows Callas at her best, both in recital and as an operatic actress. Verdi, Rossini, and Bellini were three composers at the heart of Maria Callas's career. Her personal life was of tragic operatic dimensions and perhaps no role comes closer to the essence of Callas than Floria Tosca. The second half to the program comprises the complete Act 2 of this opera, with a brilliant performance by Tito Gobbi in the role of Scarpia. A genuine collector's item, this live recording documents Callas's Paris debut at the peak of her career. Also included is documentary footage about the performance and the opera house. 91 minutes.

December 14, 2000: This is a very good remastering of a performance I also have on disc from the 50s. It is a role that Callas would have brought to the Met in 1958 had Rudolf Bing not fired her in a fit of Prussian impetuosity. Her vocal coloration and that ability to ''veil'' the sound to create dramatic effect in the Brindisi is absolutely spellbinding. It is a tremendous performance. Although she later made a better-paced and more musically insightful recording...

Biography: Maria Callas
Maria Callas offers a stirring chronicle of the unforgettable soprano and actress. Born in the U.S. and educated in Greece, Callas established her career in Europe - much in part due to her title role in Bellini's Norma - before becoming one of the most versatile and celebrated vocalists of the mid-20th century. Despite her remarkable talent, Callas was beset with hardship and scandal for much of her life, most famously her heartbreaking affair with Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, her acrimonious...
